"UNPROPITIOUS STARS."

INCIDENTS AT MARRIAGE OF MAHARAJA'S SON. The marriage of tho heir of the Maharaja. of Jeypore to the daughter of tho Maharaja of Balrampore, which took place early in March, was marked by incidents which have given rise to much amused comment.

The guests included the Lieut-Governor of the United Provinces, and assembled at Balrampore two days before the event, which was fixed for the night of Thursday. Owing to the non-arrival of tho bridegroom through illness until the Thursday morning. , the programme had to be altered, to the great iuconvenienco of all the other guests.

The usual visits of ceremony between the I.ieut.-Govcnior ami. the Maliaraja. of Jevpore naturally could not take place at the appointed times, and though the Lieut.-Govornor eventually consented to receive the Maharaja at 11.30 on tho Thursday morning, the Maharaja would not be received, and drove to tile interview some four hours later. Finally the wedding procession was delayed. The result was that the Lieut.-Governor did not go to the ceremony.

The Maharaja of .Tcypore has published a statement, in which he says:— "For reasons which are more easily intelligible to an Indian than to a European I was helpless. Till 9 p.m., according to my priests and astrologers, thero was an inauspicious time—what they call Bhadra —and till then preparations for the procession could not be commenced. This one difficulty was utterly beyond my power to overcome, but, apart'from the Bhadra, everybody knows that on occasions of Indian marriages it is impossible to be punctual in tho fulfilment of their various functions.

"One has no control over the sacramental part of the ceremony; there the priest is tho master. Then the guests are never punctual, and among the guests S'ou have certain relatives whose participation is absolutely necessary and to whoso whims you aro sometimes compelled to sacrifice most of your own cherished desires."

. Tho Maharaja apologised to the Lieut.Governor and tho guests, l and put'all the blame on the stars.
