RE FREE-TRADE.

Sir,—l should like to ask your correspondent 'Tree-trade" the following questions:—

(1) If emigrants are so desirous of seeking a Free-trade country, how is it there are sojnany people leaving England? (2) If we were to abandon the tariffs on goods coming into New Zealand, what would become of tho various manufacturing industries which New Zealand has

managed to develop and establish, and furthermore, what would become of thoso people employed in these factories? (8) If you were to abolish the greater part of the duties now levied on the goods coming into New Zealand, how would he suggest raising the necessary funds for tho upkeep and development of the country? (4) Do those people who are breaking up and developing the land, as he states, do so for fun? I am afraid not, but simply as a matter of business and with a view to making money out of it,

In conclusion, I should like )£> mention that all the protected countries, such as America, Germany, France, havo come along by leaps and bounds under protection, while Free-trade in England is simply ruining the country, but I am pleased to think that the day is not far away whon England will once again become a protected country under which 'she prospered 50 years ago.—l am, etc., WILLIS THUEMAN.
