PLUCKY ATTEMPT AT RESCUE.
IN DROWNING FATALITY. (By Telegraph-Frees As«ooi»tion.) Invercargill, May 18. 4n inquest touching tho dentil of John M. Cochrane, who was drowned in New Bivor " last Monday, was held yesterday. Evidence was given by Cecil Hazlett that tho boat was swamped when crossing the river. He helped deceased to within three yards of tho bank, when both got caught in an eddy and were whirled round. Hazlett told Cochrane to catch hold of his coat, and started to tow liim towards tho bank. .Hazlett was pulled under twice, and then Cochrane let go. Hazlett got ashore, throw off his oilskin and ordinary coat, and jumped in again with gumboots on. Ho ogain reached deceased, but there was 110 movement in him. Hazlett brought tho body to the bank and secured assistance) but Cochrane was dead when helped on to tho bank. D: Cochrane, a lirothcr of deceased, ospressed, ou behalf of tho relatives) thoir appreciatiou of Hazlefct's beroic effort to save-the deceased. ' .... Tho coroner returned a rcrdict of accidental drowning, and placed on record his appreciation of Hazlett 8 plucky-coil-duct.
