ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
MOTHER'S HEROIC EFFORT. PERISHED WITH HER CHILD. (By Telesrapn.—Prera Association.) Auckland, May 18. A residence at Waitananui, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. King and family, was destroyed by firo last night. All escaped except'a five-year-old. child. Mrs. King re-entered the burning building, and made an heroic attempt to rescue tho child. Both perished. Tho charred remains of both wero found together. STELLA WOOD'S DEATH. Invcrcargill, May 16. Stella Wood, aged thirteen, daughter of Nathan Wood, a railway employee, fell dead at Clifton while driving cows home. Death was due to heart failure. DISTRESSING FATALITY. Palmerston N., May IC. A fatal accident occurred nt Shannon yesterday. Mrs. P. Gill, on going into the wash-house, left her two-year-old girl in front of a fire. She heard screams a few seconds later, and on rushing back met tlio child in the passage enveloped in flames. Tho mother was badly burnt while extinguishing tho ilanies. A doctor was called from Foxton, aud the child was ordered to tho Otaki Hospital, but as sho was sinking fast slio was returned to her home, where sho .expired in a few minutes. FATAL FIRE. Rotorua, May IG. Word has been received that a Maori named Topnea Kiriwera, aged 50, and Thomas lung, aged five, wero burnt to death at Waitnhanui last night through a houso being burnt down.
DEATH FROM HEART FAILURE. Wanganui, Slay 10. An inquest was held to-day on Henry Parsons, aged 81 years, who was found dead in bed. A verdict of death from, heart failure was returned. FOUND DEAD* IN BED. Duncdin, May 10. Patrick M'Evoy, a settler living near Tuapeka Month, was found dead in bed this morning from heart disease. A SENSATIONAL RUNAWAY. Auckland, May 10. A sensational Tunnway occurred this morning at Eden Terrace when two horses in a four-wheeled wagon bolted. _ Tho driver, running behind and hanging on to -tho reins could not control tho animals. A man named Smith, an employee of tho Eden Terrace Road Board, attempted to seize tho animals by tho head, but his arm got jammed between tho trace and one of the horses and ho was dra.iged a distance of 50 yards. lie was ablo to keep his feet, but was kicked by ono of the horses, and when he became ■ disentangled lie fell under the cart and tho fiont wheels passed over him. Ho was dragged somo distance in front of -tho back wheels which were locked. The unfortunate man, who is married, with two children, was found to liave sustained four broken ribs, besides sustaining terrible internal injuries, nnd his condition is regarded as critical. The horses were at length stopped by tho driver without further harm being done. YOUNG MAN'S BODY FOUND. Auckland, May 10. Tho dead body of a man, name unknown, was found in tho harbour. ./There woro li"ivy stones in two of tho ooat pockets. Tho man's ago was about 21 years. Il'e had dark hair and sharp features, and his height was sft. Bin. A ROUSEABOUrS DEATH. Waimate, May 10. A man named Thomas Hampshire, acred 05. was found dead in bed shortly after midday to-day. Ho was sren about 11 a.m.. when ho was apparently in his usual h'.alth. It is supposed that he died from natural causes. Ho was a rouseabont at. the Empire Hotel, nnd came to Waimato a few months ago from Rivcrton. A BROKEN LEG. David Griffin, a man from Tokomaru Bay, was injured in Ta ran aid Street last night, no was admitted to the public Siospital suffering from cuts on tho head and a broken leg.
