ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the Wellington Zoological Society was held in Mr. J. Castle's rooms at Newtown last evening. Tho Rev. J. Crewes presided over moro than a quorum of members. Tho secretary reported that another flamingo might be expected next week. Mr. Crewes stated that ho had received a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs, saj'ing that tho Minister regretted hi 3 inability to comply with tho society's application for tlio white kiwi, V'hich was recently in keeping at Rotorua, as the bird had been forwarded on April 7 to Little Barrier Island, which is a sanctuary for native fauna. The society had asked that tho bird Be presented to tho local "Zoo." Tho president reported that Messrs. Seed and Quinnell, of tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, had waited upon him, to discuss tho question ■of convening a meeting at Newtown, at which Mr. Quinnell would deliver an addfess on the subject of "First Aid to Injured Animals.' A resolution was passed authorising the president and secretary to arrango for a meeting shortly, at which tho prizes in connection with the society's art competition will bo presented, and at which addresses will be delivered by Mr. Quinnell and Mr. Crewes.

Several other matters wero discussed. Tho society is trying to get a bear from tho London "Zoo," and hopes to arrango with onp of its members, who is going Home shortly, to comploto tho negotiations. The samo member will be asked to convoy the thanks of tho society to Dr. Mitchell, Director of the London "Zoo," for the gifts arranged for through the agency of the Hon. Jas. Allen. Tho president said ho was very pleased to notice that, although tho society recognised no politics, members of the society had recently been elected to at least seven local public bodies. Ho added that if the popularity of members continued to 1m evidenced in this way it would soon bo very difficult to get a largo meeting of tho "Zoo" Society at any t ; mo.
