CRIMEAN VETERAN.

DEATH OF ONE OF THE "DIEHARDS." . Another of the fast-disappearing veterans of the Crimean War passed away yesterday morning in the, person of Mr. Thomas Reynolds Ifackett, who died at: his residence, Broadway Terrace, nt the advanced age of 7G years. Deceased was born in _ Ireland, and onlisted in tho 57th Regiment (the "Diei hards" l in 1851, and was concerned in its j fortunes for a period of fourteen years, ire took part, in most of the stirring engagements of tho sanguinary Crimean War of 1851-55, including Balaclava, Inkerman, and (lie bombardment: and fall of Sebaslopol, and also in the expedition which resulted in tho bombardment and capture of Kinbnrn. After the surrender of Sebaslopol, ho proceeded with his regiment to Malta, and later on to India, where lie served from ISSS to 1801 In the latter year he tunic to New Zealand with his regiment, and took part in various incidents connected with the Maori War in and about the Taranaki district. After finishing his trrm of service he relived with tho rank of sergeant. Subsequently he joined the Armed Constabulary anil became Sergeant-Major of his division. In 1873 in recognition of special si'rvices rcmWe'd by liini in his military capacity ho was promoted to the position of sub-'inspoelor of the Armed Const,ibuhr.v Force, with the rank of captain, a position which he held till he retired on the reduction of that, force. While in the Armed Constabulary he took part in several engagements with the Natives 011 thie West. Coast of the North jslaud. and was also concerned in tho pursuit of Te Kooti on tho East Const. After leaving the force lie settled down in Wellington, and joined the I'osc and Telegraph Department as a battery mall, whi ell portion he occupied up to the date of'llk retirement on supcrannua'iiou on March .11 last. . lie was ju possession ot the Crimean medal and three clasps, Turkish medal, and the New Zealand war medal. For upwards of sixty years ho rendered faithfill service to tlio Crown, cither in a mililarv capacity or as a. servant of (he State. Ile'was a man of genial disposition, quiet •unl unostentatious. and will be widely , mourned, lie leaves a widow and a family j of one sou and two daughters.
