THE NEW COUNCIL MEETS. " The first business meeting of the newlyelected Mayor and councillors of Wellington city was held last evening, there being present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. p. E. Fitzgerald, and A. H. Hindmarsh, M.P. '•

The Tramways Board was authorised to purchase an Acetone welding plant for use by tlie Tramways Department, and was also authorised to call for tenders for the steel work required for tho new car shed workshops. It was Agreed that payment should be made by the Citizens' Carnival Committee for work performed and light supplied in connection with the recent carnival at Newtown Pari;, and that the council make a grant of £~l 15s. Id. to the carnival funds.
