This afternoon the foundation-stone of the lona College. ivhicli is to be established at Hav«lock Xortli. was laid in tne presence of sovcr.il hundred snectators. The college is J.einK established by Hie J'resr.yterhuis. and is to be open to girls of nil denominations. Ten acres of the pite and grounds were presented by Mr. Hn"h Campbell, and another four acres fry "Mr. Mason Chambers. The situation is an ideal one. Already over ,£2OOO has promised bv local residents, and the B»v .Tomes Patterson, of 'Wellington, who was' the chief speaker at to-day's ceremony stated that ho had had a promise of over .£SOO as the result of an initial appeal made in Auckland. Ihe v. ork of erecting the l.uildin<j has already been bosun and Mr. Hugh Campbell, who was to-da.v entrusted with tha laying of the foundation-stone, stated that.it. was the determination- of those associated with tha work to see that the building was completed and properly equipped with all liabilities paid, before it was opened.. :Uis-. Frasev. M.A., formerly of 'the Wnngamu Ladies' College, is to be lady principal. This lady hag shown lier enthusiasm for the work by agreeing to curry out her duties for live year,* without falarv.
