HOSPITAL COXTKTBUTIOXS DISCUSSED. Tho monthly meeting of the Hult Conntv Council was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. Galloway (chairman), Wakeham, Edwards, Whiteman, Welsh, and Howell. Letters were received from tho Lower Hutt Borough Council and tho Miramar Borough Council, asking the co-operation of tho Ilutt County Council in the matter of a joint protest /igainst tho big increase in tli« Hospital and Charitable Board's lery. Tho chairman said that ho did not think that anything could be done in the matter. Of course, as the population grew, the amount of charitable aid and hospital levies must increase. A councillor: I suppose all the protests will ho ofjio avail? Tho chairman: No. I don't think tliero is any remedy for the matter. We may as well join the other bodies • and see what suggestion they have to throw out. The. chairman wns deputed to represent the council at tho proposed conference to be held on a date yet to be fixed. It' was pointed out during tlio discussion that, the amount of tlio levy for tho year 1912-13 was about ,£S7S, and that this year tho amount asked for was XII7G odd. The chairman reported that ho had interviewed tho Hon. W. Eraser with reference to a grant for the completion of the Upper Ilutt-Pahautauui Road, and the Minister had decided to place tho necessary amount—<£2Q!)—on tho Estimates. In the statement of riding accounts, the expenditure in individual ridings for the'month of March, 1913, were shown as: Epuni Hiding, J-lOt fls. Bd.; Horokiwi, ,£l)3 Bs. lOd.; Mungaroa, .£lO9 3s. Oil.; Wainui-o-mata, .6117 ss. 3d.; Whareroa, J653 3s. Gd. A resolution wns passed to tho effect that the Hutt Town Board bo asked to contribute tho sum of .£SOO towards the construction of tho bridgo over the Akatarawa River, and allow tho board to lay water mains on the bridge. The Works Inspector (Mr. J. W. Cudby), in his report, stated that tho flood on May 2, although the biggest for many years, did not have such a disastrous effect as might have been anticipated. Tho county generally fared very well, and tho riding most affected was Wainui-o-mata. Some damage was done to the bridge in the valley near tho school. However, traffic over tlie bridge had not been suspended. and . repairs were being carried out. A portion of Moore's Yallev lfoad slipped away, and this necessitated repairs being effected. -Numerous ' other slips occurred through tlio valley. On Day's Bay Road, near the pavilion, a wash-out occurred, carrying awnv two fiftoeii;inch pipo culverts and about 2jo yards 'of the road formation. A culvert lias been put in ill order to prevent a repetition of tho occurrence. All along tho Day's- Bay Road numerous slips and wash-outs occurred, and a lar?e slip blocked the western Hutt. Eoad, north of Melling's Riding. Tho Moonshine Bridgo stood tho test of tho storm very well. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the council at noon on Friday, May 23, for tho purpose of considering and settling tho balance-sheet for tho year ended, March 31, 1013.
