The rehearing is being set down fur June 12. TRIBUTE TO THE TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT. Christchurch, Hay 13. The Postmatfcr-Gcnerul has received the following letter from the general manager of tho Central News Ageuey, London: "1 trust that 1 ifiay be permitted, on bchall' of the management of the Central News Agency, t.i' thank you and the ollicers of the Now Zealand Telegraph Department for tlio efficient and wholly admirablo manner iu which, they dealt with the exceptional and important traffic which arose out of the sad disaster to Captain Scott. . . . WORKING GISBORNE ROADSTEAD. Gisbonic, May 13. Following on the failure of tlio tender Tiatca to work the ii.okoia on Sunday night, and the resultant carrying on to Napier of 70 Gisbornc-bound passengers, and the disappointing of 51) south-bound Gisborneites, the Harbour Board yesterday resolved to approach the Union Company with a view to having the coastal boats dispatched from Auckland sufficiently early to ensure the working of Gisborne by daylight. In conversation with a reporter to-day, Mr. T. W. J. Preston, local manager of the Union Company, said it could be. admitted that tho working of this roadstead, with its many serious disabilities, Was now down to the "irreducible minimum." In any case, the matter of earlier dispatch from Auckland had frequently been gone into, and it was quite impossible to Uo more in this connection.
BREWERY WORKERS' AGREEMENT. Auckland, .May 13. Agreement lias been reached the Conciliation Court in tho brewery workers' dispute. Tho wages of tho leading hand in tho cellar aro fixed at i:2 15s. per week, and tho hours at dC, but tho breweries of Hancock and Co., Campbell and Ehrenfricd, and the Great Northern Co. have given an undertaking to pay not less than £5 per week. Tho wages of brewery and malt-house labourers aro increased from £'2 Ss. por week of 46' hours to £2 125.; chilling-room men aro in-, creased from ,£2 12s. per week to ,£2 165.,- . night cellar-men from ,£2 10s. per week to £2 lis.'; bottling-houso labourers aro increased from ,£2 ss. per week of 48 hours to .£2 10s. per week. Overtime has been increased as followsßrewery labourers, from Is. 4d. to Is. sd. per hour; Sunday work from Is. 4d. to Is. 5d.; bottl-ing-houso labourers from Is. 2d. to Is. 4d. per hour. All work that is dotio on holidays is to be paid for at the rate of la Gd. per liour, in addition to. ordinary wages. AUCKLAND CITY TRAFFIC. Auckland, May 13, ' Th© City Council has made a definite offer to the Minister for Jusiico of dEGOO a year for control of the traffic at four points and general supervision of tho rest of the city. PRICE OF MILK RAISED. Auckland, May 13. At tho aunual meeting of the wholesale milk suppliers, held last night, it was stated that suppliers wcro. experiencing tho worst year ever known in the milk industry. Many suppliers had already used their winter fodder during the dry summer, and tho prospects of many were very gloomy. Au increase of id. per gallon was agreed on, as tho price for milk from August 31. A resolution n-as passed favouring' tho soiling of milk at factory prices. It was a curious circumstance that at tho supper which succecdcd tho meeting, condensed milk had to bo used for tho tea, other milk being unprocurable. MINING, ENGINEERS' CONFERENCE. 'Hokitika, May 13. Mr. J. Grinimond, cpyuty; chairman, has extended au invitation to tho Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers to hold tho next conference at Hokitika, suggesting January of next year, the occasion of the jubilee of the Vest Coast goldlields, as bans; a suitable time for the- visit. The institute meets this month at Broken Hill, Australia, when tho invitation will be considered. If the itir . vitation is accepted the community will do everything in its power to make .the visit a pronounced success. GISBORNE-NAPIER FERRY. Gisborno, May 13. The ferry' steamer Takapuna, which has " been running between Gisborno and Napier since the'beginning of December, will bo taken off the run at the end ot May for three months. If circumstance! permit, tho service will 1» recommenced at the beginning of September. MR. HEKKIES AT HOKITIIJA. Hokitika, May 13. Tho Hon.. W. H. Herries arrived in Hokitikn thi'fc afternoon, aud cfter a short stay proceeded to Koss. Oil llis return ip.' tho evening he received a numbci of deputations in Tfgard to local requirements, and was afterwards cfitertained at a social and dance by tho Wcstland branch of tho New Zealand Political Reform League. Messrs. Scott and Anderson, M.l'.'s, were also present. The function attracted a very largo gathering. Tho Minister leaves to-morrow morning, aud proceeds to Ivumara, aud thence to Greylnouth. (
