THE MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY SERVICE.

.Sir,— Immediately following the discontinuance /of U;o second e.-press between ■Wellington and .Auckland, tlio insufficiency of tlio 0110 train becomes apparent. Similar conditions prevail as before the inception of the double servico last November, passengers unable to jet seats, and the usual unseemly scramble at intermediate stations. This state of things is particularly in evidence on Saturdays and Mondays, ivlicn the traffic is heaviest, and on those days there can bo 110 doubt a second train is necessary. Mr. Jfas«?.v slated in Auckland that the question of reinstating the second express to run three days weeld.v is under consideration, and this should be given a trial at once. The wild statements recently made as to tlio cost of running this 'second trajn have been very much exaggerated. Had the Departmental returns of the number of passengers included season and tourist t ieket-holders, it is doubtful whether any loss giuld be shown. The rcnuests of the Auckland and "Wellington Chambers of Commerce for the reinstatement of the train should surely enrrv some weight, and a large section nf the travelling public, particularly business men, are convinced of its actual necessity, and quite justified ill asking for il« reinstatement.—J am. etc..
