MIRAMAR AFFAIRS.
. TRAMWAY MATTERS DISCUSSED. A - -meeting ■of the Miramar Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. F.' Toirasend) presiding: Councillors Bell, Telford, Stone, Smith, Underwood, and Tracy wero alf?o present. . A communication, was received from tho Valuation- Department, in respect to the applications of property owners in. tho borough, for' 'revaluations under Section 3G of tho Valuation of Land Act, 19(38. No agreement having been arrived at in some instances in respect to the now values, it is necessary to have tho valuations determined*, by;,the /.Assessment Court. In.-cansequerice •of theVn bove communication the clerk (Mr. Bennett) was appointed assessor to represent the council at tho Court. . A report was received from Mr. F. Black (consulting engineer) on tho charge proposed bj-- the ■ Wellington City Council for running' cars wiiliiii the borough, tlio borough supplying the power.. "The in-' vestigations,' states, tho report, "showed that* for ail annual Urvioa." of 70.000 car' miles tho cost to the city, exclusive of. power, would ho : 8.5 d. per car mile, while for a service- of -72,000 oar miles tho cost would be S.-17d. As tho city proposes to charge lira borough 10d.. the profit it will make is approximately 18 per cent. As to whether -this charge shouldHio accepted by the borough or not, I certainly I t.hiuk that, it could very well bo reduced, I as not only is the rate of profit, in my opinion, too high, but the city is beneiitiilg' by carrying the- wholo of the Miramar traffic over the city lilies, and-is therefore indebted to tho .borough for a substantial amount of long-distance traffic. Under all the circumstances it seems to me that a profit of 5 per cent, would ho a fail' one for tho city, seeing that 3t also gains in the way just described, and this would mean a charge of !)d. per car mile." Tho letter was received. The Mavor of Christchurch (Mr. 11. Holland) wrote stating that the Executive Cominitko in Christchurch, which is arran"iiig matters, in connection with tho visit of 'the lE.M.S. New Zealand at Lyttelton, llad-decided that it would bo desirable to raise a Dominion fund to provide 'shooting prizes fur tho warship. Tho committee suggested that all tho boroughs in- tho Dominion should bs asked to'ioin in'collecting subscriptions. It was thought that it would bo an easy, matter to raiso £1000 in the .Dominion. It was decided to hold 'tho matter over for further consideration. In a letter received from th.e General Labourers' Union, the secretary (Mr. M. T Reunion) statod that during 'tho bearin" of the labourers' dispute before the Conciliation Council last week, the Commissionier (Mr. P. Hally) suggested that 'tho .various local bodies might prefer to enter into an agreement, on the lines of tho agreement with tho Wellington Citv Council. Tho letter concluded as under -"Should your council prefer «n agreement wo will he pleased to me.t your representatives at a tirao and place t0 jt vraa decided to abido by tho Court s decision. ■
