A petition objecting to the election of Mr. Eustace Lnno as representative of tho Hastings borough on the Napier Harbour Board hoslten lodged nt tho -Magistrates Courthouse. Tho grounds oi objection arc: (I) That Mr. Lano was not eligible for re-election, inasmuch as his name was not on the electoral roll for such district; o) that the- returning officer did not comply with tho Local Elections and Polls •Vet, il'o3, inasmuch as lie faded to recount nil l lie voting pnpc-rs handed to him bv the depulv-ieturning officers, and seru. ti'ni-L' tho imu'ked rolls before declaring the official results; (3) th.it the returning oflirer, in giving the nublic notice required bv Section 7 of the Local Elections nnd j'olN Act, 1308, foiled to appoint a day not more thin K-ven days (exclusive ol the day of the election) betore I ho election for the nomination of candidates: (4> Ihnt. the votes were counted in favour ef Eu-> lace Lane, such votes being informal, nnd •V recording of such votes affectcd tho i-esult of the poll. The petitioners siv that Mr. Lane has not been/Inly elccted, and that the election is void.
