HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FIE ST MEETING OF NEW BODY. The first meeting of the newly-elected council for the Ictohkli of lower Itutt was held last evening, when the Major, Mr. E. P. Bunny (re-elected), was formally installed, and the new councillors made their statutory declaration. The councillors present were Councillors .T. Ball, S. Ohw'on, A. J. Hobbs, 31. .T. Hodgins, H. E. Kempthorne, W. G. Meldrnni, A. D. Parsonage, and W. C. Phypers. After the installation ol' the Mayor and tho • declarations of tho councillors, tho council proceeded to 'general business. In regard to the demands of the General Labourers' Union, now before tho Conciliation Council, the Mayor was deputed to meet the representatives of the union for tho purpose of discussing an agreement on the basis of tho existing agreement between the union and tho Wellington City Council. Mr. 11. M. Ilayward was granted a public lnill license for tho Lyceum Hall In Main Street. Mr. C. Harper-was appointed to act as assessor for the council at the sitting of the Assessment Court to be held in connection with certain applications for revaluations of property. Eeporting on the progress or completion of various works, the borough engineer (Mr. W. J. lioche) stated, amongst other tliiims, that the cost of the drain age work in Haut.ir.a Street, the e-i:n:>:• for which had br'H! set down at had actually bscn .£O9 10s. 5:1., the reduced cost being due to the easy nature of the ground, the amount for labour being correspondingly small. The new drains in Alicetown were doing all that had been ex- . peeled of them, tiie slorm water bcimr quickly disposed of. The cost of this work (estimated at .£-011/, was ss. ■Jtl. Repair work on the Melling Bridge was practically complete, in accordanco with Mr. Dawson's specifications. The report was adopted. . ■
