ROSS GOLDFIELDS.
INTERVIEW AVITH DIRECTOR. (By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.) Hokiti!<a, May 12. -Mr, If. M. Smythe, local- director of the Ross Goldiields, returned to Hokitika from Ross on Saturday, after haviag rnado an inspection of the plant. Interviewed in connection with tho company's developments, .Mr. Smythe expressed himself as being well satisfied with tho general position. He stated that he thought that it would not bo long before tho company would be able to effectively enter the Cassius working, to wliicTi 'a bore has already been put through. In reply to a question as to the amount of water being met with, Air. Smythe stated "that already considerably over one million gallons had been drawn from Uio (.'ussius workings through the present boro hole. The flow was apparently running as strong as over. By next Saturday tho Cassius workings would be connected by two more boreholes, and, early in tho next week, by another two. This would give a .sufficient flow to put another pump into operation, and so enablo tho workings to be quickly drained. As soon as tlio Cassius workings were clear of water no timo would be lost in. putting iu an uprise. Air. Smythe added that it was difficult to say for certain what would l>o the upshot of this new- operation fill the next borehole was put up, and pressure guages fitted. Prim his own observations, ho thought that it was only the lower portion of the Cassius workings which contained water, ond, certainly, tho shaft was not full. Even if he was mistaken, however, and the old workings were finite fall, it would take but a short timo to empty them with (lie power at the company's disposal once they got another pump into operation. ■ On being questioned in regard to the Diesel engine, Mr. Smythe declared that it was nearly finished, and would bo readv for its'trial run in about a week. AVlien would they bo gettiijg wash? Tint'was the next question. Air. Smythe replied that' that was a matter which the board would deal with as soon as the risk from the water in the Cassius workings was removed. Personally, he thought that they would bo getting a wash in the near future, but, of course it was a question of policy which the braid would have to decide.
