MASTERTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, May 12. The weather during the last few days has been bitterly cold, and snow -has fallen on the lower hills surrounding tho town. About two and a half inches of vain has been registered since Saturday, making over seven inches for the first twelve days of the month. The cold snap has given a pinched-up appearantc to stock, and tho milk supply has fallen right off.,' Old settlers aver that the winter has come earlier this year than for at least two decades. The Wairarapa Rugby Union decided, at a meeting on Saturday last, to issue special season tickets to all Wairarapa schools, including the Hikorangi Maori College. Mr. William liayner, of "Tho Cliffs," has secured very satisfactory prices for his llonino.v wool this season, his returns for tho January and March sales averaging );?Jd. per lb. The settlers at Hukanui, in the FortyMile Bush, have formed a ccmmittec to further a project to secure communication with the West Coast by means of a stock track. Nine new members were elected at tho annual meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on Saturday. Tho net gain of members during the past year has been 205. Mr. J. Georgeson has been elected president fcr the ensuing year. At a meeting of stewards of the Masterton Eaeing Club on .Saturday last, tho secretary reported that a profit of over ,£IOO'J had been made on the recent meetin" 1 . It was decided to inform the Woodlauds Hunt Club that the club cannot see its way clear to extend financial support. It was resolved to iucreasa tho Hilary of the caretaker of the course to illO. Messrs. J. B. Moodio and T. Bngnell are to report upon the advisability of retaining the ten shilling totahsator. There are at present 28 patients in tho local hosrital, five of whom are in the jevcr ward. The young man. M'Millan, wh.'i sustained serious injuries through a fall' from a I;ic.vclc a few days'back, has Tccovercd coiiscicmsncss, aud is making satisfactory progress.
