Presentations. The marriage of Miss D. A. MacKenzie who, for a number of years, lias had charge of the typing department of Messrs. Baldwin and Kayward, patent agents, is to tako place shortly, and, on severing her connection with the firm, she roieivetf presentations from tho principals and members of tho staff. In appropriate speeches, the members of tho firm asked Miss MacKenzie to accept an oak case, containing plate and cutlery, and Mr. Wilton, for tno staff, presented her with a case containing silver plate. Miss MacKenzie has always been pocular with her associates in the office, her geniality and kindly nature having won tho esteem and Tegard of all with whom she has been brought into contact. She has left tho firm with the good wishes of everyone for long lief and every happiness. The New Viscountess Wolseley. The Dowager Lady "Wolseley and her daughter, tho now holder of the (title, will continue to resido at Hampton Court Palace, in which they have one of tho lincst suites, states "Tho Queen. It is the one that used to bo occupied by Princess Prcderica of Hanover, and is contained.in the long range of buildings oil the right of the entrnuco gatos. Its tenants also enjoy the right to a beautiful private garden. The rooms aro very spacious, and filled with the varied treasures brought together by Lord and Lady 1 Wolseley during their many travels. In© latter has made a very valuable collection of old Queen Anne furniture and needlework pictures, besides many other artistic things. , , . The new Viscountess Wolseley in her own right has for some years been known as a clever and energetic woman, with a decided spirit of enterprise. Gardening is perhaps her chief hobby, and she has written a book on ilie subject, and founded a school for lady gardeners at Glynde, in Sussex. Among the students aro girls and women of good position, who find in high-class gardening a suitable employment. Iler own garden at Glynde is terraced, arranged in the Italian style, and most beautiful. Slio has artistic tastes and fancies. She gave Lady St. Cyres an original present at the time of her wedding in July, 1912. It took the form of a plan of a rose garden, painted in natural colours, and was executed at the Glynde School for' Lady Gardeners. The new peeress is also a great reader, collects books, and has her own bookplate,
which is most artistic. The new Lady Wolseley is ono t of the only two viscountesses holding titles of their own i« the peerage, the other being Lady Hamblcden. There are, liowever, a great many baronesse? in their own right, headed by Lady de Eos, who is the senior of her order. Mrs. Haslam returned to Christchurcli on Saturday evening from a very brief visit to Wellington. The evening which was to have taken place at the Pioneer Club on Thursday for Mrs. Knight has been postponed till tho following Thursday. The death occurred rather' suddenly at Featherston on Saturday evening of Mrs. J. W. Card, the wife of Mr. J. W. Card, solicitor, of that town, and chairman of the Local Town Board. The late Mrs. Card spent her girlhood in Greymoutli, being a daughter of the late Mr. Edward Ashton, of that city, and had resided in Featherston since her marriose, about fourteen years ago. , The deceased lady had not enjoyed the best of health rjr several years past, but was as well as usual up to a few hours before ber death. Miss Nornh Moore has returned to Masterton from her visit to Wellington. Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher returned to 'Weilington yesterday from Aueklaud. , Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Bentloy, of tho Marlow Dramatic Company, are staying at the Columbia Private Hotel,' Lower Cuba Street. Miss Loeta St. George (Masterton) is visiting her sister, Mrs. H. Wood, in Napier. Tho invitations have been issued by tho Mount Cook Private Tennis Club for a dance to be held in St. Peter's Schoolroom on Friday, May IG. A very strong working committee promises to make tho function a. great success. Tho cliaperones are Mesdauies Kitto, Madcley, M'Eldowney, and Patrick.
