HOCKEY.

SPLASHING IN THE RAIN. All hockey players must linvo been pleased oil Saturday morning to seo such lino prospects for an afternoon's sport, but, alns, they wero to bo sorely disappointed. At ICarori tho rain fell in torrents all tho afternoon, an<l towards tho second spell everything and everybody was wet. On No. 1 ground ICarori l>eat Wellington by a "hpot." No. 2 ground witnessed tho defeat by 9 to nil of Metropolitan by Victoria College, whilst tho remaining senior fixture, Government Lifo v. United, was won by the latter with littlo to spare. SENIOR RESULTS. ICnrori 2 Wellington ...... 1 United 3 Insuranco 2 Victoria College !) Metropolitan ... 0 KARORI (2) V. WELLINGTON (1). From start to finish this game was going hard all tho time. 'Wellington started well, and soon moved down into Black territory, but tho veteran T. Spiers drovo them Ixiclc, and for a timo tho game hung nt half-way. Then Jl'Killop seized possession, and sailed away down, the wing, but his centro was intercepted, and away went tho Ulyo and Whites with lteid in possession. Williams stemmed tho tido by hitting well up, and tho Blacks now instituted another passing rush, Jlorrak this tiino proving their "uudoer." The rain now increased, but tho players' enthusiasm was by no means dampened. Kurori warmed to thp attack, and a. good pass from .Spiers, jun., was taken advantage of, for Strack passed to Henderson, who, in his turn, found tho. net with a good shot, and tho Black "barrackers" on tho lino showed warm approval. Tho Bluo and Whites never play to well as when they aro hard-pressed, and they went at it with a will. They wormed thoir way down into tho Black territory and stayed there. Tho defence was good, but the attack was better. Such onslaught was suro to ho rewarded, for from tho ruck Fauvel emerged, and Shot to somo purpose, for tho scoro now rend 1 all. ICarori, per medium of Jl'Killop, moved onward, but Morrah cleared time and again, and shortly beforo lialf-timo Reid (Wellington) ,liad hard luck in not goaling. At half-time tho teams merely changed round. Wellington kept nt it, but Parton (centre-half) and T. Spiers proved sterling defenders, and timo and again they started tho forwards moving. Success at last, was at hand, for Murphy secured from a good centre, and shot a neat goal, whicli mado his sido 1 up, with tho scores 2—l. Tho Whito anil Blues wero now hot on tho scent, but L. D&vios was not lacking in defence. Bay (Wellington) sent in several centres, but tho Black defence was solid all tho way. Hoid also mado several good runs, but tho centre-forwards did not avail themselves. Timo was now at hand, and tho whistle went, leaving Karori victors after a hardfought contest. Mr. J. C. Cusack had cliargo of the game.

UNITED (3) V. GOVERNMENT LIFE (2). Judging by performances, it was thought that tlia older club would easily prevail, but this they did not do. In i'act, they had to fight for their win, and had it not been for tho 6plcndid defcnco of Jl'Ehlowiwy thoy would havo been defeated. Tho initial bully-off soon found United attacking, but Cleavo (left-half) saved nicely, and tho 13hio and Blacks breathed more freely. United still persisted in attacking, and Christie several tirnos set his forwards going, but one© in tho circle they wero sent back. At length Boyd secured. > and mado no mistake about it. This did not dishearten the Government cmployeos, for thev boldly resisted all attempts made on their goal. Thoy got down luto their opponents' territory, but M'Eldowlicy and Bodley kept them well out. Tben tho Hods nttacked again, and it was Robinson this timo who shot and brought their tally up to 2 goals. On resuming, Insuranco played to somo purposo, for after a hard rush,. Shirrock found the nets with a w«Il-jud§ed shot, and his sido wero only one behind.. This thin lead awakened United, and it wns not long beforo Liddlo notched another goal for thorn. From now on it must bo said that "Life" worked with _ much more vim. M'Eldowney several times drovo tlieni back, but thoy were in. earnest, and so was Sturrock v/lien ho reached tho circle and shot a goal.. With only ono goal bohind, it was thought that Insurance might "land tho mustard," but no further score resulted, and United left the field lucky winners by a goal's lead. Mr. J, AV. Gendall was referee.

VICTORIA COLLEGE (9) V. METROPOLITAN (0). Early in the season Metropolitan appeared to bo ft sturdy combination, but on Saturday's play they proved tliem- ' selves a very poor lot. Whether College 1 were right on their form, or their adi veisaries right off, it is hard to say, but it was very evident that Metropolitan were a "ono horse team," and that horse was M'Gregor. With a vim and vigour characteristic of College, they went away ' from tho commencement. Their forward ' line played with clockwork precision, and , it was not long ere George Strack had : netted a goal. .They were up and nt it' again, down they went—Cleghorn, Griffith?, and the three Strack brothers—and , George Strack put on tho finishing touch and tho Greens wero 2 up. This lead was evidently not satisfying, for Cleghorn finished up n further effort, and George Strack showed that ho had not by getting another goal. When half-time < came the Metropolitan eleven wero minus four goals! College always wore a good team on a wot ground, nnd evidently their leadwnS not enough, for George Strack shot his fourth goal, and his side wero 5 up. M'Gregor stemmed several rushes, but ho was playing a lone hand, for Con Strack next penetrated tho defence only lo be followed by Cleghorn, and the Greens wero now leading by 7 I goals. Tho Reds niado one or two vain attempts, but their attack was disjointed. College sallied away again, and this timo Karl Strack finished the family contribution by a neat goal. But College had not yet finished, for Griffiths found the nets, and with a nino goal victory College left tho field. Mr. C. H. CockreU was referee. 4 JUNIOR HOCKEY. St. Augustine's proved far too good for United, whom they defeated by 4 goals to 1. At KaTori, Gregg's succumbed to St. Mark's by 4to 0. Smith (2), Burdekin, and Eyndham wero tho scorers. Wellington, after a good tussle, defeated Hutt Valley, at Karori, by 5 goals to 3. LADIES' ASSOCIATION. SENIOR, College Old Girls met Ramblers B, but tho game was rather dull throughout the first spell. At half-timo the scoro was: College Old Girls 2, liamblcrs 0. Tho first goal was obtained by Miss Woodman, Miss Shearer, with a nice run, being responsible for the second. In tho second spell Ramblers were much improved, and consistently kept in College territory. But the opposing backs wero safe, anil it was some time before Miss O'Learv was al)lo to register « score. This proved to bo tho only goal Kamblers obtained. Syrens defeated Gregg's bv 3 goals to nil. JUNIOR. Technical College drow with Girls' College Old Girls, tho scores being 1 goal each,,
