RAMS FOR PERU.
IS NEW ZEALAND MISSING A MARKET? Referring to the fact that tlfero ap-' pears to be a market for rams iu rent and that I'toni recent happenings there ■seems a probability that it will be captured by Australia, nil exchange has'the following to say:—"Prom a South Australian contemporary it is learned that by a sailing siiip which left Melbourne' on April 28 there was sent away a consignment of 50 Romney Marsh rams from South Australia, destined for Callao, Peru. The shipment is being made by Messrs. Dalgety'and Co. (Ltd.), and tlis order was received from their London office. liealising tlvat this was a trial-ship-ment, the above-named firm were determined to send really superior sheep. Messrs. Feuerheerdt' Brothers, of Crower, Lucindale, were fortunate enough to bo able to offer the required number. Messrs. Dnlgcty and Co. secured the services of Mr. 1!. S. i'otberiiighain, as all uninterested expert on the breed, to examine the Grower rains. His report was most favourable, and no doubt the ranis will give a good ateount of themselves in their new home.
"The question suggests itself whether the sheepbrepders' associations should not extend their operations and seek to secure markets for our stud sheep. It doesseem singular that buyers should go to Australia for what are termed British breeds of sheep, instead of coming to New Zealand, where the breeds may be said' to be more general. Evidently New ZcaJand is -not advertised to anything like the same extent as our island continent neighbour, and here tli-o sheepbreedcrs'- associations might with advantage to the members spend surplus money, or even make a levy for the purpose. It is said that an attempt was made recently by Sydney agents to place an order for 400 Eoniney ranis for Peril. Probably New Zealand breeders could not have filled the order, as they had disposed .of their rams locally; but there is a possibility that the filling of part at least of the orilcr might have been deferred for a vear if negotiations had been entered into. Australia is likely to bo a more serious rival in tho course of years. Not only are breeders turning their attention to British breeds, but thuir ranks are likely to be augmented by the accession of a sou of the late Air. File, one of the greatest of Home Country breeders, whose stud was recently dispersed. Young Mr. File, who was in Australia not long ago, has slated that il;_is his intention -to selile in New South Wales or one of tho other Slates."
