BROOKLYN CLUB. THE NOVICE HANDICAP. , Despite the wretchcd weather that pre. vailed on Saturday afternoon -10 members assembled at tlie Miramar Tea Eooins. filteen taking part in the Novico Handicap, while the other 25 held a club-ruu. The handicap, being the first of the season, proved exciting. I'. Harvey, llUsoc., who is the youngest member in the club, ran a well-judged.' race, and maintained his lead from start to finish. Ho was closely followed by 1!. Howard, 9'Jsee., and K. Coffey, 3!>s<!c., who finished second and third respectively. The remainder of the field finished well up, 200 yards separating the first and lust man. Jf. Cook, who started off scratch, covered the distance in 12min. 13sec.i and recorded fastest time, missing the club standard badge by a few seconds. After tho race, members who were not eligible to start in the handicap held a go-as-you-please run over the course, tlip run-in resulting in a dead-heat between E. Shaw nnd L. Brown. Members afterwards entertained their lady friends at afternoon tea. Next Saturday tho teams' race will be held from the Oriental Bay Tea Kiosk, and ten teams of three men each have entered. Should the day be fine this race should be interesting. WELLINGTON CLUB. The weather conditions on Saturday afternoon were dccidedly unfavourable to the 22 members of the Wellington Club who journeyed to Lower Hutt Kacecourse to participate in the annual Novice Handicap. Of tho fifteen competitors who entered for this event, only nine put in an appearance and seven started. Tho winner turned up in A. Pleasant, fcec., with G. Weston, 2min., second, and ]?_. Ea'glc, HOsec., third. Also started: W. Donaldson, ser.; B. Hately, Msec.. T. Eagle, lOOsec., and A. A. Hyde, 2m : n. Despite wet clothes and general iinconifoi'tableness, tho spectators showed a keen interest in the contest.. The extention of the limit this year had the desired efTcct" of keeping tho field strung out until practically tne end of tho race. On previous occasions, when the limit-men have had only some 50sec. start, they liavo almost invariably been overhauled, by the buck-markers shortly after completing tho first lap. Tho adverse conditions uudet which the race was run proved too much for Donaldson on scratch, and at the completion of tlio first lap he appeared to bo labouring badly, and making little impression on tho limit-men. The order of finishing was as follows:-A. Pleasant, 13min. -iisoc.; G. Weston, 13min. -tSsoc.; H. Eagle. ISmin. Msec.; W. Donaldson, limin. asec. The winner's actual time was 13min. Usee. The fastest time was 12inin. s?ec.. recorded by W. Donaldson. Next Saturday the j'uu will be. ucld from Kelburne 'J'ca Kiosk.
