MUNICIPAL WORKS.
THE MAYOR'S ANTICIPATIONS. Interviewed by a representative of The Dominion yesterday with regard to tho various municipal works to be undertaken during the coming year, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) explained that the estimates of expenditure contemplated by .the various departments of the corporation were now being drafted by tho responsible officers, and as soon as theso were ready, copies would bo circulated amongst the councillors in order to allow them the fullest opportunity of mastering tho various items before they were dealt with by the council as a whole. "Speaking broadly," said Mr. Luke, "tho ordinary requirements in respect of street formation and improvement, and other works which come within the domain of the City Engineer's Department, will absorb something like .£30,000. Improvement work on the roadway in lower Cuba Street, in the vicinity of tho Town Hall, and along Jervois Quay into Taranaki Street, where there is a good deal of heavy traffic, is urgently required, as the condition of the road is far from, satisfactory, requiring something better than macadam. Out of the ordinary revenue account there is spent each year a certain amount for extraordinary undertakings. In 1911-12 the council expended ,£20,000 in this way, while last year .£17,000 was disbursed. What amount will bo. available this year will, of course, depend upon our rates and rents, but if our expectations aro realised there should be available a substantial sum for various work, the nature of which will he -determined by the council."
