A BETTING SCHEME FAILS. FOOTBALL TIPSTERS' LAMENT. By Telesraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, May 9. The schemo for systematic betting on football matches has failed. So alluring were tho odds in certain instances that backers rushed them, leaving alono the prices which tho promoter designedly fixed to keep himself ahead. Tho successful tipsters have been informed that tho bank is broken. One won ,£lO and several others .£2O each, but none received oven tha stake back. TA message published on Mav 1 stated that systematic betting on football matches was being introduced in Victoria. Circulars had been issued giving directions to persons wishing to bet. The odds laid ranged from three to ono to those selecting two winning teams, playing off their own grounds, to a hundred to ono to those selecting the winners of two home matches, five away matches, and one drawn game in tlio one afternoon. The name of tho promoter of the scheme was not disclosed, but it was understood that the betting_ system was launched in Sydney. Certain people in Melbourne had been asked to become agents for it.]
