STATE GRANT.
NGAHAURANGA GORGE ROAD. At yesterday's meoting of the Makara County Council, which was presided over by Mr. P. T. Moore, souio discussion took place, in respect to tho improvements •which tho council is carrying out to the Ngahauranga Gorge Roa;l. It was pointed cut that the council- is spending about ■ ,£IOOO in reconstructing certain bridges on the road, and improving it generally. This sum, it was pointed out,'would do oil the necessary work excepting about , half a mile of the . road, wnich would cost about <£500,--and ;thb-'council: decided to approaoh' the Government' and ask them to provide the extra amount. Shortly before noon tho council adjourned and formed itself into a ' deputation, and •. waited on the Hon. W. Fraser, Minister for Public Works. Mr. W. H. D. Bell, M.P.v introduced the deputation. ' Mr. Moore (chairman of tho council) said that thero was a good deal of Gov- • brnment property in tho county, which was unrateable, and the council had to maintain the roads approaching this property as well as those approaching tho ' Porirua Mental Hospital. The speaker also - pointed out that tho condition of the road was dangerous, and it was badly in need of repair. , The Minister replied that he recognised that the road was in need of. repair, and that the amount asked for, namely, ,£SOO, ■would be placed upon the Estimates. In the meantime tho council could proceed with the work, provided that the district engineer was acquainted .with th.e nature of the work.
