LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Tko Parcels Branch of tho Post Office,, which has beon located for several yearsf past in the old Drill Shed, Maginnity Street, is on Saturday night to be removed to tlie basement of tho new Post Offico building. Business will b« commenced in tho now quarters on Monday morning at 8 o'clock. The public entrance to tho new Parcels Office will be in Grey Street. As tho ferry steamer Maori was leaving Lyttelton for Wellington on Thursday evening, a young lady who was seeing a friend off suddenly overbalanced and fell into tho water. Tho third officer of the Maori (Mr. Irwin) immediately plunged overboard, and after swimming somo distance, managed to get to tho lady in tho water, and hold her up until further assistance was forthcoming. At tho time of tho mishap tho Maori's propellers were revolving rapidly, and both the rescuer and rescued were in imminent danger of being caught in the blades. Those who witnessed tho rescue state that Mr. Irwin's action was a very plucky one. The various standing committees of tho City Council having now elected their respective chairmen, the Financo Committee which, with tho Mayor, consists of tho chairmen of the committees, is constituted as follows:—Tho Mayor (Mr. J. I'. Luke, who is also chairman of the Tramways Committee), Councillor G. Frost (Reserves Committee), Councillor Jas. Godbor (Abattoirs Committee), Councillor A. R. Atkinson (Legislative and Leasehold Committee), Councillor W. H. P. Barber (By-laws Committee), Councillor A. H. Hindmarsh (Libraries Committee), and Councillor J. E. Fitzgerald (Outlying Districts Committee). Tho first meeting of tho Financo Committeo will bo held oil Tuesday next. Advico has Ijcen received by tho Miramar Borough Council that tho two 150 horse-power Diesel oil engines for the council's power-houso will arrivo in Wellington towards the end of August. This plant, which is being supplied by Messrs. Niyen and Co., of jSapier, will enable the council to supply all the tramways within tho borough with electrical energy, making it independent of the city. The portion of tho plant for driving the pumps in connection with tho drainage works has already been installed, and it is reported to bo doiug its work satisfactorily. Messrs. J. and E. Barber's executors oro about to erect a substantial brick, concrete, and steel building on tho sito uf tho old wooden premises adjoining Mr. K. Cooper's seed warehouse, in Willis Streel. Tho building, which will be set back 10ft. from the present building alignment, will consist of a basement and three fiooi;, tho ground floor of which will ]» occupied by a retail ironware firm. Mr. W. C. Chatfield is tho architect.
