There was a larRG attendance of members and visitors at the ordinary meetins of tho French Club, held on Thursday evening. Mr. Stuart Meutcath pave an exceptionally interesting and instructive lecture, entitled "Les caracteres de la Bruyerc/' in the course of which he described tho magnificence of tho Palais do Versailles, and tho conditions of liie at tho Court of Louis XIV. Air. Menteatli gave numerous extracts from the writings of Bruyero, whom he considered, judging from the standpoint of to-day, an author penetrating rather than profound. During the discussion which followed, the lecturer was warmly complimented. Professor Von Zedlitz made au able commentatory on tho subject of the evening. The Misses Smythcson and Decleene contributed musical items, which were much appreciated. A hearty vote ol thanks, proposed by Mr. W. Hudson, and seconded by Mous. Duflou, who prodded, was accorded to Mr. Meutcath.
