MERELY BANK GOSSIP.
CLUB NOTES AND CHANGES. Un enfant prodige, who should get a plnco in the Oriental first fifteen is young Sullivan, who played live-eighths last Saturday. He gave a good account of himself in all parts of tho game, and his feinting runs were well worth seeing. Sullivan is an ex-St. Patrick's College boy. "Knee," sustained in one of the early matches of tho season, prevented Goodbehere (College wing-three-quarter) playing last Saturday, but he is expected to tako tho field this week. Mitchinson, it is stated, is likely to spend ttie greater part ot tho winter 'in Wellington, so that Poneko are likely to have liis- assistance until tho season is nearly over, A new member who is expected to reinforco Oriental this season is Smith, who played live-eighths in tho North Island country representatives last year. "If 1 had a yallcr dog that didn't know no more tnan a person's conscience does I would poison him," quoth iiuck Piun. There are times when similar considerations apply to a sense of duty, i'or instance, AJgar went to somo trouble to get away from a Territorial cauip oil Saturday, in order to play lor Poneke in their match at Miramar. All that he got out Df it was a terrific smash on the nose, incurred in an inadvertent collision with Brewer, of tho same team. Algar's nose was broken, and badly dislocated. Brewer fared not quite so badly, but had to liavo a bad cut on tho sido of his noso stitched up. Joy is in tho hearts of Petono supporters because the nows is going round that J as. lfyan will continue playing alter all. Ho came out of tho match against Poneko with a damaged foot, but the injury proved to bo of a temporary character, and liyan will get to work again, showing Petono how to do things. His inclusion means a great deal to Petone, and, in another sense, to other teams in tho competition. "Wellington will tako the field to-day with a readjusted back division. L. Bridge, who has been playing half-back, will take full-back, a post which suits him much better. Lambert, who has been playing full-back, will shift to centr6-threc-quarter.' Tho new half-back will bo Henderson, who played in the openihg match of tho season. Dwyer, captain of the juniors, wlu> played in the senior fifteen last week, will go back to his own team. The wing-three-quarters will be, as hitherto, Durio and M'Gregor, and tho five-eighths' will bo Graco and Ellis. Murray, who played for St. James's Club last season, has rejoined Athletic, and lie will probably be out with the black and Blues to-day. Hennessey, one of the Athletic hookers, had a rib broken in the game with Oriental last Snturdny, and he is retiring from the game, probably for the season. His place will be filled from tho junior ranks. A. Evensen, who was resting last week owing to a lame foot, will be in action with tho Athletic backs to-day, Athletic have no nows of Gosling yet, and there now seems to bo a possibility of his staying out of the game for this season. Vacation for Victoria Collego players will be soon here, but it is not expected that this year's holidays will affect tho senior or the junior teams to any extent. Noiv that the College is doing so well on tho Kugby field it would be n pity for (ho players to let their holidays interfere with their chance in the competition. How about winning that cup, College? Capping day would be nothing to such a night of victory! Wellington and Auckland are to play a special match this season. Auckland aro opening a- new ground, and want the attraction of a go with Wellington to aet ns a good kick-ofV. The fray will be reliarded as !i special challenge for the liuulinly Shield. ".Vntiunal Defence" has '.'hiiined several Rugby-ites as patriots (his uiH. Among these is T. Beard, who is. therefore. :i doubtful starter for Victoria College iu the match against Wellington to-da.T,
Auckland 'Varsity men will play Victoria College hero on June 3. The local Collegians arc asking tho Wellington Union to allow them to make a charge, out of which to meet expenses. Wellington will play Auckland on July ID. Tarauaki goes to Auckland in August. AV. Bennett, forward, will in all probability be out for Victoria College again to-day. Bennett hurt his ankle rather badly at Miramar last week, but hopes to bo a bin to seo this afternoon's match through. Tarauaki and Wellington representatives are to meet at Hawera on Juno !i. An early match between AVcllington and W;iirarap;i is on tho cards. Tho game will eventuate in Wellington. llclroso will be strengthened to-day by Ihe inclusion of Ifivers and Collins as wing-three-quarters. Both players gave a good account of themselves in the later matches of last season, but they will make their first appearance to-day, so far as the present season is colicerned. Members of tho Wellington Football Club continue a happy family. They will meet together at a smoke concert to be held in the Marine Institute on the evening of Saturday next. Tho AVellingtou senior team to meet Victoria College this afternoon will be the same as that which played against Melrose last week. The meetings between tho two clubs always excite keen interest. In the past, Wellington teams have.mostly proved superior. 7,ast year the first match was a draw, but in the rocond round AVcllington defeated tho 'Varsity team.
