On tho whole tho health of tho Natives in tho north is now good, Although recently there was on outbreak of diphtheria in tho Utakura Valley, and ORaihau nnd Thoreke. During the past ccuplo of woeks a big gathering, at which over TOO Natives were present, was held at Kohukohu, in connection with the -.mveiling uf a, monument to a Maori chirftain. Tho hip; assembly occasioned some concern to 'the wliito settlers, but on the lloalth Department's inspector visiting tho scene ho found that tho Natives had arranged for perfect hygienic surrounding?, a state of affairs tlmt was in marked contrast t« former gatherings of the kind, whicl proved conducive to the spread of variow epidemic?.
