THE SUPPLY OF CLERGY.

In his address at the chrysanthemum show in aid of the funds of Hadfield Hostel, the Anglican Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Spkott) stated that an institution which trained New Zealand' students for the ministry 'of the Church was deserving of support, for they ought not to look to the Old Country for their supply of clergy. This is a fact which cannot be too strongly impressed on tho lay mind. It was absolutely necessary in tho early days, when the Church was first planted in New Zealand, for the Bishops to look to tho Mother Church for their staff of clergy, but the Dominion ought now to be able to fill tho ranks of tho ministry from within its own borders. Wo have a university at which our young men can get the best secular education, and institutions like St. John's College and Hadfield Hostel to give tho necessary instruction in theology and pastoral work. Some people may think that it would lie better for the Anglican Church throughout New Zealand to concentrate its efforts so as to havo one strong and well-equipped theological college —or at most two, one for each island; but. under present conditions this ideal is very difficult to carry out, and, therefore, it is the plain duty of the Churchmen of the -Diocese of Wellington to see that Hadfield Host-el is supplied with sufficient funds to make it a vigorous and efficient institution, It grows more and more urgent every year that an adequate number of young New Zealanders should be trained for the ministry, becausc it is becoming increasingly difficult to pet men from England, as the supply there is hardly keening pace with the demand; and the position can never be considered satisfactory until New Zealand is able, if necessary, to meet its own needs. Tho roll of St. John's College, which was founded by Bishop Selwyn, shows that some of the best of our young men have entered the ranks of the clergy, but the number needed is constantly increasing. The Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, and other churches are also giving much attention to tho training of candidates for tho ministry; and, though it would be a mistake to shut out recruits from abroad, New Zealand should, as years go by, become less and less dependent on the outside world.
