« CONCERNING BESPOKE WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedirii May 7. 11l Tespect of tho application of the Dunedin Operative Tailors' ojid 'l'ailoresses' Union, protracted argument ensued over tho clause affecting bespoko work. Mr. Prior in applying for exemption for retail drapers, said the original clause intended that it should protect legitimate traders and the public against deception, and inform them of factory-made clothes sold as tailor-nude suits.
Mr. Jenkins, on behalf of the employers, said that if the old clauses were reestablished it would lead to bringing 111 the American system which, briefly, consisted of supplying temporarily-finished stove suits that could be altered easily to meet the requirements of customers. This system had done away with many ordinary tailors in America. The Court reserved its decision.
Another interesting case was that seeking an interpretation of tho Furniture Trades Award, the question being whether labourers should be employed on certain machines aud be paid one shilling per hour. The matter really a fleeted ono firm. The managers of several other firms gave evidence for the union showing that it was absurd to put labourers on machines, and that it was not the general practise to do so. Decision was reserved in this cass also.
