RUGBY CONTROL.
THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS' UNION. AND MARIST BROTHERS. Tho Wellington Rugby Union met last night. Mr. E. O. Hales presided. Mr. D. Weir reported that Mr. D. Kitto and he had .-interviewed the Public Sshools'. Rugby Union on the subject of tho admission of tho. Marist Brothers primary schools to tho Schools Union s competition. ~,,,, . • '•Mr. Weir stated that. tho. union still declined to admit outsiders, saying that they did not like tho idea, of outsiders coming into their competition. Had tho Schools' Uiiion met the deputation earlier some other arrangement might have been arrived at. ( Someone interjected that the Schools Union had 'been communicated ,with, by the Wellington Rugby Union in ample time/ Mr. Weir said, also, that it was stated that Rugby-was not making headway in i primary schools. Mr. W. Perry: That is rot. _ . Mr. Weir said that the Schools' Union produced figures to show that Rugby ill the public schools was going ahead by leaps and bounds. ' Mr. Perry remarked that matters seemed to bo going well, and the only thing to make conditions quite satisfactory was tho admission of "these other schools to the Schools' Union. . . Mr. Kitto: They (the Schools' Union) could not give us a definite reason for keeping the Marist Brothers out. Mr. Perry: They never could. Mr. Hales observed that a bad feature of the Schools' Union's methods was that boys were not allowed to play in the Schools' Union's competition and m tho Rugby Union's fifth class competition. It was decided, to again approach the Wellington City Council to ask for a remission of Athletic Park rates. Selwyn applied to have their fourthclass team withdrawn from the competition. The reason given was that the club could not find enough players. The application was "ranted. Messrs. E. O. Hate and W. Perry vaopointed to represont the Wellington Union at a meeting of Rugby Union de egates to be held to-day to arrange the intor-provincial fixtures for the season. WEDNESDAY MATCH SERIES. The only match in the Wednesday football competition played yesterday afternoon was that between Oriental and Butchers. Artillery, who were drawn to meet Tramways, could not put a team in tho field owing to tho players being uuable to get leave, and the match between Petone and Athletic had to bo posti poned owing to the Petono ground being under water. Oriental beat Butchers in a hard-fought scramble, by 5 points to 3. For the winners, Cowles scored a try, which Perry improved, and Little scored for Butchers. G'liristoplierson niado a good, but ineffectual shot at goal from the losers' try. Mr. L. Simpson was referee.
