ORINGI MOUNTED CAMP.
1 (lly Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) Oringi, May 6. llr.veillo sounded throughout the Oringi camp for llio first time at 0 o'clock this morning. Tho summons was obeyed prumplly, and, by 11.30, squads of men could bo teen .scattered over the parado ground practising physical exercises. It was a bright, frosty morning, and tho half-hour's drill before breakfast was appreciated by the men. At 9.30 tho regiineiils paraded and rode lo their several training areas, where they were separated into squadrons and again into troops for the remainder of tho day, except for a spell for dinner. Elementary troop and squadron drill was carried out. Tho men, as a whole, aro taking a keen interest in their work, and Captain Foster confidently expects that, by the middle of next wcclt, they will be training as a battalion. A speciab squad of men is being instructed in the management of tho maxim guns by Lieutenant Itose. The signallers are also settling down to their work. The field ambulance have, as yet, bad no serious call on their medical chest, only one accident having happened. This rwas a case in which Trooper Patin, of A Squad, Sixth Eegiment, suffered somo injury to his hand while holding a refractory horso. A board has been set up to inspect rations and forage before it leaves the supply stores. Captain J. E. Elnvslie (Second Regiment) lias been elected president, with I;;nutcnant H. P. .Taylor (Sixth Regiment) and Lieutenant Is 7 . D. Cameron (Ninth Eegiment) as members. By this moaus it is anticipated that nono but the very best of food will reach the men and horses.
The men's recreation when off duty is being organised and supervised for by the Rev. Mr. Robertshaw, of t'ho Church of England lien's Society, and Mr. Ryan, of tho 'Y.M.C.A. A huge marquee , has been erected and well stocked with reading and writing material. A piano has also been supplied by the Y.M.C.A. Following is the official number of offioers, men and horses in camp:— Colonel A. 11. Russell, in command; Captain Foster, brigade-major, witli six Staff officers. Second Regiment: Colonel Davis, 15 • officers, 302 men, 323 horses. Sixth Regiment: Lieutenant-Colonel Cringle, 20 officers, 352 men, and 3SO horses. Ninth Regiment: Colonel Sandtraann, 17 officers, 311 men, and 327 horses. Signalling: Lieutenant Herbert, 1 officer, 10 men, and 17 horses. Ambulance: Major O'Brien, 1 officer, 11 men, and 3 horses.
