ROSS GOLDFIELDS.

: —♦ ' OLD CASSIUS WORKS TAPPED. (By Telegraph.— Special CorNssiiondanO Hokitika, Mav 6. Persistent rumours wero in circulation in Boss (to-day tlint the Ross. Goldflolds Company had succeeded in tapping the Cassiu3 workings. The management were, however, very reticent, and it was,- therefore, difficult to-get authoritative information. Careful inquiries, however, elicited the information substantiating the rumour, and it was also ascertained that the vertical bore hole was put through into the Cassius workings some time this morning, and that a large body of.water, 'ulider considerable pressure, was met with. This water has been flowing with a steady stream ever since, but the electric pumps are now working so well one pump has been found to readily respond ito the increased demand made upon it, and is handling the whole of the water, thus leaving the other pumps in reserve to meet any emergency On further inquiries this evening, a "Weat Coast Times" reporter found that the ninin six-foot level drive is being pushed on. nml tlmt mo or more boro holes will bo most likely be put up so as to increase the flow of water, from the Cassius workings, and allow another electric pump to be got into operation, thus lessening the time required to drain the old working. As all 'the old workups at Ross are inier-connected, the electric plant is now pumping the whole of the Ross Flat, ami doing..so with comparative case.
