Regarding tho Smithfield_ butchers' strike the only definite news is to the effect that more men havo been taken on. There were forty new mon on tho board to-day, and all the other men are in their places. The trouble has spread to the PartOra Works, Whero the unionist butchcrs knocked off this afternoon, only fivo men staying on. The s.e. Zealandic, which has lain In the roadstead for some days owing to bad. weather; came in this morning to load meat and other produce. Tho waterSidorsl, howover, declined to turn-to (On general cargo), and it' is understood that they will hold a meeting to-morrow morning to decide whether they will work her or not. After hearing from their secretary, who \vent north with Mr. P. C. Webb to-day, the striking butchers and watorsiders invited the managers of the freezing works and/shipping to a this morning. but tho managers declined. The Smithfield manager said that the time for a conference had gone by, and the shipping men replied that they had nothing to confer about. They did not want to be dragged into tho other dispute. Both tha freezing companies sly that they will not take on again any of the butchers who have gone out, and will havo no more to do with them. As regards the loading of the ZeakindiP, exporters say that they will find men if the watersiders refuse to work, and, if they trv to block the boat at other ports, they will find men for theso also.
