MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, May G. The annual report of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society shows that this sports body has made a considerable advance in recent years. The membership subscriptions have increased from .£145 in 1903 to .£396 in 1913, while the total receipts have increased in tlie same period from ,£4iS to .£1179. 'Die total membership of the society now stands at 621. It is stated that Mr. H. C. Robinson, who has tendered his resignation from the Masterton Trust Lands Trust, intends offering himself for re-election, presumably lo test public opinion concerning his attitude on the High School question. Thoro will be four seats to bo filled this month, and t'lio election promises to be interesting. Three alleged breaches of the Licensing Act are to be investigated at. the sitting of the Magistrate's Court on Friday next. Mr. W. M. Halley, formerly of Carterton and Palmerston North, has purchased the interest of Mr. B. Douglas in the Taratahi Hotel, and takes possession on Saturday next.

The first meeting of the new Board of Managers of the Masterton) Y.M.C.A. was held last evening, when various committees were set up to control the operations during the ensuing year. It was decided that a cabinet, be formed of tho secre. tarics of the different committees, to make recommendations to tho board as to improvements in administration. • The annual meeting of the Masterton Chess and Draughts Club was held last evening, there being a largo attendance of members and intending members. Mr. J. T. Dagg was elected president, Mr. IC. Welch secretary, and Messrs. G. Jones, C. Winchester, and W. Moore a-match committee. It was decided to endeavour to arrange for two matches against Wellington clubs on May 23 and 21. Mr. E. L. Holmwood, Mrs. Holmwood, and Miss Holmwood, of Masterton, leave Wellington on Thursday by the Rangatira on a six months' "visit to the Old Country. During Mt. Holmwood's absence, the loc.il brn.uch of Messrs. .1. Macintosh and Co. will lie in charge of '.Mr. A. C. O'Connor. ,
