According to cable advice which has been received by tho local offlco of tho F. and S. Line, tho steamer.- Westmeath. which left Wellington for Avonmouth on March 17, arrived at her destination oil Sunday, March 4. WHAKATANE IN PORT. After a passage of nearly four days, the New Zealand Shipping Company's Whakatane arrived in the stream at Wellington from Auckland. The vessel came from St. John, and will berth at the wharf this morning. 'No doubt the Whakatane met tho full force of the recent southerly gale coming down the coast, and this has been responsible for the delay. On completion of discharge; here the Whakatane proceeds to Lyttelton and Dunedin to finish. Subsequently Ehe loads at Oamaru, Timaru, and Lyttelton, leaving the last-mentioned port for London towards 1 tho 'end of this month. AN UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL. Yesterday morning a strange steamer was observed making for Wellington Heads from tho north. She turned out to be the cargo-carrier Roseric, Captain Sbotton, bound from Peru, South America, to Melbourne. Tho Roseric is not a stranger in these waters, and on former occasions has put into Wellington for bunker coal. This timo she is here for the same purpose. and before proceeding on her journey 450 tons of Westport coal will be nut in her bunkers. The Roseric, whioh has a Chinese crow, left Peru on April 6, and experienced adverse weather all the way down to the New Zealand coast. During the latter part of tho journey tho vessel mot with the strong southerly gale which visited these chores recently. So strong was the wind and sea that the steamer only made 200 miles in two days. Tho Itoscric's cargo consists of a full load of granulated sugar. This is tho first of its kind to bo sent from Peru ,to Australia, and is in tho nature of .an experimental cargo only. It is expected that the Roseric will continue her journey this evening.

KAIPAEA'S LOADING POETS. On completion of discharge of her London cargo at this port, the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Kaipara (due here on May 8 from London) will commence loading for London. She will visit Waitara, Tokomaru Bay, Napier, Wellington, and Lyttelton. Final departure will be taken from tho last-mentioned port for London about the end of this month. KESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. A. Bunting, third offloer 'of the Taviuni. and Mr. R. Gilbert, thfrd officer of tho Komata, have exchanged positions. Mr. E. W. Doolin, third officer of the Katoa, left that vessel at Wellington this trip. Mr. G. Madden filed the vacancy. Mr. R. M'Donald, lato purser of tho Union Company's steamer Oonah, has resigned from tho company's service. Captain A. Norton bias rejoineds the Katoa, and Captain R. S. Walton has come ashore for instructions. Mr. Thomas, lato mate of tho Mana. has joined the Now Zealand Shipping Company's Ruapehu as supernumerary officer. In consequence of the injury which Mr. Tongo (chief officer) received at Hobart. all the other officers of the' Euapehu have been promoted a step. Mr. J. Hudson has joined tho auxiliary scow Echo as mate, vice Mr. W. 11. O'Neill, who left that vessel at Wellington yesterday. Mr. C. Buchan has joined the Mokoia as fourth engineer. , Captain Hunter, of tho harbour pilot srtafY at Lyttelton. was a passenger for south by the Maori last evening. The New Zealand Shipping Company's Ruapehu leaves port- to-morrow for Lyttelton. Afterwards she loads at Lyttelton. Tiniaru, and Wellington. Departure will be taken from this port for London 011 May 29. It is anticipated that the New Zealand Shipping Company's Opawa will clear Wellington for London on Saturday, May 10. Telegraphic advice received from Picton last evening stated that the Patecna was scheduled to sail lor Wellington at 3 a.lll. to-day. She should arrive iu port about 7 a.m. Information has been received by the local oilice of the F. and S. Line stating that the Nairnshire, originally intended to leave Liverpool for Now Zealand ports 011 May 6, will not get away until May 20. It will be May 31 before the SulTolk leaves Liverpool for New Zealand. She was 10 have sailed on May 21. The !•'. and S. Timaru. Wellington, and Auckland, takes her final departure for London from the northern port on May 29. The officers and crew of the ferry steamer Awaroa were paid off at Wellington yester* day, and the vessel wag laid up. On account of her lat-c arrival at Wellington from northern norts yesterday, the Monowai's departure for Lyttelton and J)uncdin has been postponed till 2 p.m. today. Tho Tfavua, >vhich is due in port from Suva, via Auckland. to-morrow, will he dispatched for Lyttelton on Friday. The Uaupiri will not leave Wellington for Onehunga till to-morrow. Messrs. Levin and Co. advise that the coastal steamer Wairau will bo dispatched from Wellington for Blenheim at 11 ft.ni, to-duy. She will be followed by the Opawa at 10 p.m. Continuing her journey from Greymoutli the Union steamer Arahitra left Westport for Nelson, l'icton, and Wellington at 9 a.m. yesterday. She is due in port about 9.30 p.m. to-day. It is expected- that the Tyscr liner Whakarua will leave Woilngtoii for Loudou on Sunday morning. Nerchaua, s.s. (from London) is due in port from Napier this morning. She berths at tlie Queen 6 Wharf No. 6 to land cargo. Another big liner, which is Boon to make her first acquaintance with ocean voyaging in the Australian trade, is the Nestor, of 14,250 tons, built for the Blue Funnel Line of Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co. Nothing has been piore remarkable of rccent years, says the Sydney "Telegraph," than the number 'of line new passenger and cargo libers built for tho trade with the Commonwealth, and it' is claimed, for the Nestor that she is the largest of them all. It. is, however, given to no vessel in these days to hold that enviable position very long, and the Nestor is apparently destined to be surpassed in point of size by tho new White Star steamer Ceramic, which is of no less than 18,000 tone. No merchant vessel of anything like theso dimensions has yet been seen in the Australian trade. Messrs. Murray, Roberts are tho local agents for the above line.
