THE FRUIT INDUSTRY.

STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION. Tho rapid development of the fruit industry in the Nelson province made an impression on Mr. S. Martell, manager of tlie Hawke's Bay Fruitgrowers' Company who has just completed a tour of Nelson. On his return home Mr. Martell informed a local interviewer that it was very evident to tho observant that Hawke's Bay, w long tho pioneer in all pertaining to fruit, must look to her laurels if she would retain' them. The vast market of South America had opened the door to a new era for the apple grower, providing that he will adopt methods enabling the commercial man to treat with tho business. Nelson and Motueka districts were rising to the occasion, and in view of the enormous increase in applo production •which must take place within, the nest two or three years, it behoved all whose interests clustered round tho orchard to bo preparing to meet tho over supply of tho local market, by a proper export trado on sound lines. The Nelson people had in several districts adopted association grading and packing which had resulted in a very fino uniform grade of fruit being supplied to the buyers, with the result that repeat orders eome unsolicited,. and they were unable to meet the demand. "Uniformity of grading and packing"' is their motto, and they were rapidly appreciating the 'value of the same in rising prices. All best grade fruit is packed in lined .cases with wood wool, thus ensuring it reaching customers in best possible condition. According to Mr. Martell the cool store now in operation at Nelson is proving a great commercial success, and the growers themselves, he said, are arranging for the erection of a cooperative store at an early date. To be up to the times, Hawke's Boy must have equal facilities. The Americans say: "Lots of men dodge across the road when they see opportunity coming." Are you one of the cheese factory managers, who has dodged your opportunity to instal "Victor Vats" in your factory? If so, just watch the fellow who grasped his opportunity—see what splendid quality cheese ha.is turning out—note the big profits he is earning—the "Victor" Vat has helped him tn do this—it can help you the same. Grasp your opportunity now—don't hesitate. Send for particulars to Albert J. Parton, Carterton.—Advt. It is stated that, a parly of Danish dairy farmers propose making a. trip lo New Zealand, and to arrive about October next. The progress of (he dairy industry in New Zealand is said to be creating considerable interest in Denmark.
