Two prisoners on remand, John Fairle) ami George Groves, who escaped from the Palinorston lock-up on Sunday evening, aro still at large. The police are out scouring the district, but, so far, 110 cluo <o their location has bcenobtained, The escape was facilitated by the insecure nature of tho lock-up, DEFENCE RESISTER FINED £5. Hamilton, May 5. An offeuder wlio lias been repeatedly before the Court for failing to attend parades under the territorial scheme, was again brought before the Magistrate, and fined X's and costs. It was stated that the offender had not attended drill or camp since the scheme was initiated. The offender said he did not believe in the scheme, and would never attend parades. He also stated that the odiccrs. were not fit to train anybody. Other offender? were fined X 3 and costs. STATIONER'S STOCK DAMAGED. Auckland, Hay 5. A iire in tho premises of George Lo Petit, stationer,'' Victoria Arcade, on Saturday night was speedily extinguished, but damage to the extent of several hundred pounds was done. REPORTER'S CASE IN COURT. Dunedin, May 5. (i Tho charge against five Territorials of "ducking" a reporter named M'Cann at Oiß Sutton camp was adjourned at tho Police Court for ten days, owing to the absenco l'roiu town of counsel for the defence.. CAMP AT YALDKURST. Christchurch, May 5. General Goilley visited and inspected the casual camp at Yaldhurst to-day. Afterwards he addressed tho men, slating that, ho was very pleased to see, that, despite the weather, they were doing their work cheerfully and well. Good work was being done, especially at the riflo range. At the present stage of training, both with Territorials and cadets, ho thought that a miniature range was mora useful than a full range, and was preferable for instructional purposes. FIRE IN INVERCARGILL. 1 nvcrcargill, Mav 5. A seven-roomed house in Clydo Street; owned and occupied by Mr. Fred O'Neill, cordial manufacturer, was badly damaged by fire to-night, two rooms being gutted. The damage to tho house and furniture will probably amount to ,£3OO. The insurances are not ascertainable to-night.
