CHIEF ENGINEER'S DEATH. (By Telesrapb.—Press Association.) Nelson, May 5. The inqiict oil the body _of l'ercy \\\ Bnrnett, aged :>7, chief engineer ol the Kennedy, disclosed the fact that deceased spent Saturday Jiiytit in a walk round with a relative, lie was found dead in his berth at. midnight. The mcdical evidence showed that death' was duo to hemorrhage 011 the brain caused by a tumour. A verdict was returned accordingly. THOUGHT KO TRAINS "WERE RUNNING. (£y Telcsrapli.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, May 5. A. man named Colo had a miraculous escape from death on tho railway line on tho AVestmcro Hill yesterday. Ho works for a farmer in the vicinity, and, yesterday evening, was coming into town along tho line, in tho belief that no trains would be running on Sunday. It so happened, however, that several troop trains wcro en routo to the cauip at Oringi, and it is surmised that one o£ these struck Cole. In any case, lie was found by tho sido of tho lino by the crew of tho train early this morning, having lain there all night in tho cold and rain. ' He had a couplo of scalp wounds, and was unconscious, but, notwithstanding his Jong exposure, ho is now doing well at tho hospital. CYCLIST SEVERELY INJURED. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent ) Masterton, May 5. A man named George M'Millnn . was cycling to Masterton this evening from tho Waingawa freezing' works, when ho met with a serious accident Ho was found lying on the sido of tho road in a pool of blood, and in an unconscious condition. Ho was removed to the Masterton Hospital, where.it was found that ho had sustained severe concussion of the brain. At a late hour to-night lie was in a critical condition.
