OBITUARY.

SIR TATTON SYICES. By Telcerauti—Press Association—Capyrisfcl London, May 1. Sir Tattoa Sykes, Bart., is dead. Sir Tatton Sykes, who was the fifth baronot, was born in 1826, and succeeded his father in 1860. His publications ore:! "Sidelights on tho War" and "The New Reign of Terror in France." He owned about 34,000 acres. His heir is his son, Lieutenant-Colonel Mark Sykes, M.P. It was as a breeder of racehorses that. Sir Tatton Sykes was most famous—the Slednicre yearlings being well known the world over. It was only the very best that tho baronet aimed at producing and at tho Doncaster yearling sales each September his lots almost invariably reached big figures. The most remarkable feature about tho yearlings is the avorage they have maintained for over 20 years, and _it is recorded that since the year ISOO Sir Tatton Sykes has told at Doncaster 20.1 yearlings at an aggregate of 274,180 guineas, an average of nearly 1203 guineas. What yearlings tliey have been, too! C'hjldwick was the first great or.e about 22 years ago, and among his successors was Spearmint, who, after being sold as a yearling for 30(1 guineas to Major Loder, won the Derby (MB0) and the Grand. Prix do Paris (,£10,008). Last season's racing showed Slodmere youngsters to the fore, Hall Cross just missing highest honours among the three-year-olds and Craganour (a 3200gns. yearling) claiming firstclass rank among tlio two-year-olds. Naturally there was keen demand for the yearlings from the same stud at the Doncaster sales on September 12 and 14; lob realised .11,G00gns., being an average of 220l!gns. This is a record in England, except for tlx.' <{iiito abnormal sale of the late Duke of Westminster's yearlings. But if Sir Tatton Sykes received good prices for his yearlings ho was a plucky buyer himself and at the sale of the late Baron llirscli's horses some years ago, he gave U.OOOgns. for La Fleche, the dam of Baroness La I'lecho and John o' Gaunt (sire of Siryjiford).
