Poiuaro arrived from Normanby yesterday by the aew Plvmouth express. The Hon. J . ->1. Fisher will arrive from Sydney by tho I'limaroa on Wednesday. The Hon. \\. (lie Hon. A. L. Herdnian, and the Hon. H. H. Rhodes are in Wellington. Mr. A. G. Longworth, of Fox ton, lias been appointed an instructor in tlio Physical Education Department, in. placo of '.Mr. A. l)avis, who recently found it necessary io resign in order to proceed to England on private business. Mr. Longworth arrived in tho Dominion about eighteen months ago from Finland, where ho received his training as an instructor. As soon as he has completed tlio work upon which ho is now engaged in tho Court Of Appeal, the Hon. A. L. Herdman (Attorney-General) will go to Auckland, w'nero lie is to open n new Public Trust Office building. Probably ho will leave Wellington to-morrow, or on Thursday. Before returning to Wellington. Jlr. Herdnian will inspect the New Plymouth gaol and other prison establishments in tlio North Island which ho lias yet to visit in connection with the tour of investigation which he commeuccd some months ago. General Godlcv, who yesterday inspected the Territorial camp at Yaldhurst, Canterbury, is a passenger from the south by tho Jiararoa, duo this morning. Colonel E. S. Heard, cliicf of the Geno- ■ ral Staff, is at present on n tour of inspection in tho Auckland district. Ho will return to AVellugtoii 011 'lJiursday. Captain Estcourt is a passenger by tho Mararoa, duo this morning, from Lyttelton.
Mr. G. A. Pearson, locomotive engineer at Petone, who has received a transfer and promotion, to Addingtou, was yesterday presented by tho officers aud staff of tlio Wellington-Napier-Now Plymouth section with an oak chest of cutlery, inscribed. Mr. Bargh, Workshops manager, in ado tho presentation, aud referred to the growth of the railway work on this -section during tho eight years iu which Mr. Pearson had been at its head. Mr. Pearson returned thanks for the presentation, aud expressed regret at having to leave Petone. Cheers were then given for Mr. aud Mrs. Pearson. In tlio evening Mr. Pearson was tlio guest of the officers and stall' of tho Petone Workshops at a smoke concert, which was largely attended, aud at which ho received u travelling rug as a presentation from the Petone Workshops. Mr. Richardson, of Auckland, will take Mr. Pearson's placo at Petone.
Messrs. P. Y. Wales, of Dunedin, and William Crichton, of Wellington, tho architects appointed by the Auckland Grammar School Board to select designs for tho new school at Mount Eden, visited Auckland at tlio end of last week for the purposo of selecting the tlireo test designs.

News 'was received by cablegram on Friday last of the death dn New York of Mi - . Arthur Temple Firth, of Auckland. Tho deceased was a son of tho lato Mr. j. C. Firth, tho original owner of tho Matainata Estate, and a very'old Auckland resident. Tho deceased left Auckland in 1911, and at tho timo of his death was conducting business in connection wiitli tho Voltibe Company, of Auckland. Mr. Firth was very well known in mining circles in Auckland. The deceased has three brothers in AucklandMessrs. K. C., W. T., and B. C. Firth. Dr. A. Itnmage, lato of Waitara, has commenced practice at Brooklyn. Mr. James Hall, 8.A., senior mathematical'and science master in Palmerston North High School, has been appointed a senior master in Wellington Collego. At yesterday's meeting of tho counc'l of the Chamber of Commerce Mr. J. L. M'Clintock (for Mr. 11. Hamilton, Vacuum Oil Co.), and Jlr. A. P. Green (for Mr. R. W. Dr. Morris de Growo, a German sportsman, is at present visiting Wellington. He has been deer-stalking ill ,the Nejson district, and is quite satisfied with his experiences. Later on Dr. do Growo intends to shoot big gamo in Java, Sumatra, and India. Mr. Herbert Linldater, of Messrs. Gray and Jackson's staff, was yestorday morning as a sorcitor of the Supremo Co'nrt by his Honour tho Chief Justice, on tho application of Mr. Gray, K.C. The Rev. Canon Hough, of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, who died last week, was'for more than a quarter of a century rector of St. Judo's, liandwick. • Ho was in his 70th year. ,About a fortnight before his death hd received a paralytic stroke, from which ho never rallied.
