MASTERTON NOTES.
0 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, May 5. Owing to shortage of railway trucks at Wellington, Masterton coal merchants have been unable to secure, their supplies of coal. Tho severe weather of the last few days has done considerable damage to tiio roads in' outlying districts. The hope is expressed that the Minister for Public Works will seo his way to visit tho district during tho next few weeks. Comparatively little damage has been done by tho heavy rains, other than to tho roads. The rivers have been in flood, but nono of them have overflowed their banks in these parts, ami the loss of stock, if any, is small. It is stated that a number of sheepowners in this district have expressed a desiro to confer -with representatives of the Shearers' Union on the subject of.the demands made by the latter. During last season tho Wairarapa farmers paid «£1 per hundred for machine shearing, and there is no indication of a desire to como below this amount. Tho Labour party has signified its intention of running candidates for seats on the Masterton Trust Lands Trust, tho annual election to which takes place this month. About four inches of rain has been registered in Masterton during tho last four days.
Mr. Burns, President of the Local Government Hoard, has arranged for a scries pf experiments being undertaken at the National Physical Laboratory with a view to ascertaining how far it may lie practicable to frame regulations prohibiting the use of dazzling headlights 011 motorears.
