(Bi TekeraDh—Sjecial Correspondent.) THE SOUTHERLY GALE. Wanganui, May 8, Th'o dairy industry continues] to go ahead in this district, which will soon bo served by another butter and cheese factory. This will be located at Okehu, about fifteen miles from town. The plant will bo sufficient to deal with, the milk of 1200 cows. Customs duties collected at the port of Wanganui during the month of April amounted to .£6711 is. 3d.—a decrease of i! 528 os. 7d. on the returns for the same month last year. The excise duty also shows a falling off, being only .£l3l, as against X 238.
Wanganui has experienced the full force of tho southerly "blow" now prevailing over the Dominion, very stormy conditions having lasted for 21 hours, with heavy rain and a bitterly ,cold atmosphere. There is no immediate sign of improvement. A very heavy sea is running on tho coast, while, inland, the telephone communication is interrupted. No damage of a serious nature, however, is so far reported, though gardens, etc., have suffered severely.
