NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph.—Special lteporter.) . Blentfeim, May 1. ! Unfortunately, the fine weather of yes- i terdav broke during tho night, and heavy . rain tell all day. Tho stewards decided . to'race, and a iair crowd (considering tlio weather) put in an. appearance at Kiverlaiuls.. Tho rain canto down in torrents, 1 and the going soon cut up badly. Tho stewards sent the horses out to do their preliminaries at the usuol time, but then, brought them into shelter again until Starting time. This was a consideration much appreciated by riders and owners, and other clubs might copy it with advantage. Perone.il again had a . very easy victory in tho big handicap, but the remainder of tho form did not work out so well. Owing to the receipt of a telegram from tho captain of the I'atesna that the weather was very bad m the Strait, and it was inadvisable to ship horses, many passengers cancelled their trip, and will now have to remain nc Blenheim until Saturday. Most of the horses will remain behind till the same that the first race came on the' course liad • become very heavy. Pavlova, tho Porirua two-year-old, was made i very warm favourite, but Royal Sleeves .(with Deeley in the saddle) easily brought about her defeat. The favourite drew an outside position at tho barrier, and Eoyal Sleeves jumped out well clear of hor. Tho two-year-old could make no impression on Deeley's mount, which won easily by three lengths in .the good time (considering the going) of 512-sseo. ' Sinapi9 scored a meritorious win m the Telegraph Handicap, for which several other horses were better backed. At the jump away, Stysk ond Lord first became prominent, but Leapuki soon joined them, and, at tlio half-distance, was well clear, with Styx. The latter 'was done with at the bottom of tho straight, and Leapuki piloted tho field. Half-way down the running Sinapis challenged the leader, and, after a splendid finish, Deploy got his mount home by a head. Kilts was third, and ran a much belter race than yesterday. The whole of tho ten acceptors went to the post for the Hack .Welter Handicap, which was a good betting race. Indra and Princess l'lo finished up favourites, and made the running to the first turn, where Teviotdale took charge, but was immediately joined by Waitolo. i'eviotdale easily shook oft Waitoto in tho straight, but had to be ridden out at the finish to hold Astonishment, who was a Ion" way back in the early part of the race, and, but for this, would certainly have won. , „ , ' Undecided and Ceylon were withdrawn from the big handicap, leaving fivo runners. Peroneal again started a good favourite, and if anything, won mofo cas'ly than she did on tho. first day. The race was a replica of tho Cup, except that tho remainder were bunched for six lurlongs when they strung out badly. Commotion struggled on well . under his light weight, and got second place from Sea Queen. Arioin was a furlong 'away, last. The winner was equally at home in the soft going as she was on top of the course. , , . , , . As is usual with him in- short races, Aralialia again startfrl a hot favourite in ' the live furlongs Hack Roce, but he failed once more, and could on]} finish thud to • Sir Moutou and Lady Louisa. - The start was a perfoet one# find the field iiin in a ' line to the fiiX turn.
