CITY ELECTIONS.

THE LISTS BEING CHECKED.

AND MISTAKES FOUND. WHICH AFFECT RESULTS. The laborious task of checking over the work of the deputy-returning oflicc-rs' and pull clerks in the municipal elections is being done by 'the, returning officer and his staff, atul it will bo probably three days before MY. Ames can make a definite declaration of the vol's recorded for the several candidates. It must, be understood that tlio counting of the recorded voles in the booths is do no aI" the end of a strenuous da;,-,' and by men who fully understand tlu.t Sliced is a consideration ill the compiling of the returns. Tlio result is tlu.t mistakes aro frequently discovered. In this election numerous mistakes wcro undoubtedly made. Although tlio papers from only eleven of Ithc ninety booths Used havo been counted, sotno mistakes havo been discovered, which may conceivably affect tho results. I'or instance, one of tlio candidates for the council is credited with 100 votes more, owing to 'tlio discovery of ono mistake. His cay! is not exactly one in point, but if a.similar error should bo iliscovercd in tlio computingoort r the total of, say, Messrs. Cohen, Trevor, Luclrie, TrcgoM, or Fitzgerald, something quite intnvo.sting might depend upon it. In the meantime, thoso candidates whose names aro at the bottom end of the first fifteen on the published list must not consider Iheusplves out of tlio wood, and those immediately below the fifteen have.a right to go on hoping. Following were the returns so far as they had been corrected up till 5 p.m. yesitcrd.iv- The returns for tho Harbour Board aro not included, because they havo not been made up by the returning officer's staff, and also bceause no mistakes have been discovered which threaten to affect the result: — THE CITY COUNCIL, Fletcher, It 10,835 H&rber, W. 11. 1' 10,02fi Fuller, J 9,740 Atkinson, A.
