Sergeant Edwin Hickey and Constable Barclay went to St. Ives, twelve miles north of Sydney, to serve two commitment warrants upon Thomas Ldwin Brown, an orehardist % ero - They found Brown, who is aged fifty, ut the foot of his orchard, and when ho learned their business l)o invited tho offi- . cers to pome into the house. . Tho trio walked there, chatting amicably, and Brown led the police officers Into tho sitting room. Then, turning Jfound suddenly, ho asked them what they inesnt by coming r to his house, and ordered them out. Constable Barclay then told Brown to ' tonsider himself under arrest. The other members of the family then, entered the room and Constable Barclay ' attempted to seize hold of Brown. Sergeant Hickey also jumped towards Brown and was almost touching him when three shots rang out in quick succession, jijld a fourth report a little lat^r. Sergeant Ilickey collapsed immediately, three of the bullets having lodged in his stomach, while, tho fourth had struck Brow-n's son ou the wrist. Sergeant Hickey died on the way to the hospital. Brown was arrested and brought before the Court and charged with the murder of Sergeant Hickey. 'A remand was granted. k The accused Brown has attracted considerable public attention of lato years owing to his. persistent appearance in tho Supreme and other Courts as a litigant. Ho has filed affidavits on various occasions alleging corruption among the Judiciary Law Officers, and a number of higlr officials. Sergeant Hickey was a native of New Soutli Wales, and was iiged fifty-two. He joined the police service in 1831, and was generally well liked. He had tho reputation of being a tactful officer and was iVery highly esteemed by his superior officers.
