THE NEW WAY.
MODERN'"VVOJIAN: OLD IDEAL, Once more tlio old glorified ideal of woman, as "a being resplendent of beauty, but vacant of wit," lias been made the subject of attack. Finding her intact in "To Doris," a Jersey woman lias risen and had at her, until .she looks as much like kindling wood as.she does "tlio lady coming down stairs" at the International Exhibition of Modern Art. Doris was a littlo lady—but here she is as the poet placed her: If, my Doris, I should find ' That you seemed (lie least inclined To explore the depths of mind (Jr of art; .. ' Should such fancies ever wake, . Understand without mistake, Though our hearts, perhaps, might break, We must part. I'd as lief your little head Should bo cumbered up with lead As with learning, live or dead, Or with brains. I have - really doted less On its outline, I confess, w Than tlio charming nothingness It contains. Do yon think tlie summer rose Ever cares or ever knows. By what law she buds and blows On the.stem? If the peaches on tlio wall Jlust by gravitation fall, , ' Do you fancy it at all 1 Troubles them ? Ko as sun or rain is sent And the happy hours are spent' iio unaskingly content As a star. •Yes, be over of the few, Neither critical nor blue, But be just the perfect you That you are. And here she is in a bit of the Jersey woman's interpretative writing. "If," says this spokeswoman, "one's horizon were bounded, as in this exquisite little poem, by .amiability and the easy acceptance of such adoration, life would be one satisfying monotony of breathing out a puny existence. : lint this typo of woman as 'the ideal,' ignorant and silly as she is,' fastens the doitblo standard of morality in her husband which, while she is charming and sweet, allows him to be profligate and self-centred. When we lmvo less of this winsome innocence and more intelligence in women we shall lmvo less vice and more virtue in men. To develop woman is to develop man." —New York "Evening Post."
