Blenheim, April 30. : The Marlborough Cup meeting opened to-day .beforo a very largo crowd, and in ■glorious weather. The Cup provided a .very easy victory for P-oroneai, who led throughout. Tho stewards held an ineiuiry into a- mishap which, brought Sea Queen down, and; after hearing tho evidence of Price, decided that ths'occurrence had been accidentally caused to Siriapis being ' steadied and Sea Queen getting on .her heels'.. The poor showing of Undecided was also put down to tho accident. The results generally woro surprises, and some big favourites went clown. . i . Heflenois, Royal Sleeves, and Parky ■wero backed in that order in the Maiden Hack race. The favourite drow No. 1 position at the barrier, and had Oliver m tho. saddle, .but she loolted very light and moved short in her preliminary. At tho start she moved out first, bur Tan across the field and boxed them up. Royal Sleeves joined her at the end of two furlongs, and Wailand, with Parky, followed. Tho last-named took oharge et tho distance,, and ran in a winner by ti'alf a length from Wailand, with Itoyal Sleeves just clear of Hellenois, and tho others beaten off.
Stepney, Huia, ,<ind'Divorce were the E&le'ctions for the Open Welter Handicap, but' an outsider—Moree—won 'comfortably. Some delay was cauwd at the barrier by Curator,. but the start was a good one. Stepney soon got cut out, and went back, and. the early running was made by Beacon and Divorce, with Iluia iu attendance.. Divorce was first into tho straight, but Moree came fast on tho outside,, and soon settled everything. Huia finished better than Divorce, and Beacon and Stopney were next to the placed horses. After the race Bell (the rider of Moree) and Tapp (rider of Curator) were called before tho stewards for alleged interference with Stepney. Tapp was severely cautioned, but Bell was exonerated. Tho Electric Hack Handicap was a good race between The Great Mosul owl Arafciatio, who wore in the* Ji'out tho whole way. It was-a good start, but Aratiatia was quickest to begin, and with The Great Mogul on his- quarters, they entered the straight vrcll clear ot the others, who were headed by- Merry Guv. Tho Great. Mogul had a little in reservo at the finish, and won a good race by a ueclc. Toviotilnle, who finished very fast, ran into fourth place, liatipnra broke down in the race. _ The Cup was tho easiest win of the day, and rtent to Peroneal, 'who jumpci to the front when the held settled down, aiul was not headed again: Down the back fiinapis led the remainder, who wore bunched, At the five furlongs ~or. Queen got on to tho heels of Siuapis and camo down, but neither liorso nor rider T?as injured; Tho accident, however, settled the chances of Ariom and Undecided. Ceylon came fast, in tho straight, niid disposed of Sinapis, but had no chance with the winner who won pulling up by several lengths. Merrivonia was fourth. Byron was withdrawn. Commotion ?«»■ a short price in the '(.lack Welter Handicap, but he was very sore, and coiiM not begin under his big weight. Tndra jumped out- first, but Princess Flo soon took charge, and galloped away from the field. She, in fact, won about as easily as did Peroneal, and k&vc Emerson his second winning ride.
Waitoto. headed Indra at the turn, and was well clear of her as they passed the post. Tlio favourite was well beaten. Leapuki, Ivilts, qml Styx were evenly backed in tho Flying Handicap. 1 hough there was considerable delay at the barrier (caused by Kilts) the start was_ a good one, and the field ran together ior a furlong, when. Styx look charge from Glenspring and Divorce. with Merry Frank next, anil LeapUki and hilts 111 tho rear. Halfway down the running jtoree challenged Styx, and the held closed up. Moree, however, held her own, and won well by a couple of lengths with Leapuki, who had como from the tail of the field, in second place juso clear of Merry Frank. After tho race, tho stewards w-ero colled together to jiear a complaint against Tapp (ruler ot Olenspring) for boring in at the start ot the race. It was decided to again warn hi" l - , , i, l ? Only four runners woiu to tho for the concluding event, and once, more the ■favourito was beaten. The winner turned up ill Glenfern, who rail very consistently at Masterton, and to-day beat two well-backed ones in Portland Lady awl Black Lupin. Elevated, the other starter, finished close up.
