DIVINITY DEGREES.
OXFORD ADHERES TO RESTRICTIONS. By Telegraph—Press. Association—Copyright (Rcc. April 30, 11.35 p.m.) London, April 30. The Convocation of Oxford has adhered to the existing limitations to divinity degrees T>y an overwhelming majority. The University of Cambridge recently decided to throw open its divinity degrees to Nonconformists, laymen, and others. Oxford,, however, has decided not to follow this coarse. Judging by a recent statement by tho Archdeacon of Northampton, the objection is not to reform in this matter, but to tho reform as proposed. It is felt that the degrees should be opened to all Christian theologians (whether Anglicau or Nonconformist), but, to quote the Dean of St. Paul's, "not to those who regard Christianity as a house built upon the sand." The Archdeacon stated thai "the only way to secure a statute drawn on these wise, tolerant, liberal—and yet conservative —lines is to reject the one which is now brought forward." It seems probable that the question, will be again brought forward in an amended form.
