Governor .Johnson defended the legislators' action, and indicated.that any arguments Mr. Bryan could adduco were unlikely to influence the Slate's action. Mr. Bryan lias reported llio proceedings at the Conference to Washington and lias asked for further instructions. The Conference has now adjourned. THE JAPANESE MENACE. In (lie House of Representatives, Mr. Thomas Sisson said if the alternative to the Japanese demands' regarding California s restrictive legislation was war or submission, ho favoured war. Captain Rolleston, recently of Sydney, thinks Australians are needlessly alarmed regarding the Japanese menace. There is 110 likelihood of the friendly relations between Britain and /Japan being terminated for many years; therefore Australians aro safe.
