MARTON BOROUGH FINANCE.
(By Telegraph—Speoial Correspondent) Marlon, April 29. At the final meeting of tho Marton Borough Council the retiring Mayor (Mr. K. E. Beckett) reviewed the' position of the borough. Ho stated that when tho present council came into office the overdraft was JCISSS, and, despite the extraordinary expenditure incurred through the dam breaking, it had been reduced by nearly .£■loo. Tho general rates in 11)10 were in 1911 JM6O, in 1912 0:1-190, whilst jiow they were estimated at .£1374. The reduction in rates for the four years had been .£770. The gasworks, on which over .£2OOO has been spent, were in splendid condition, and making an excellent profit. Tho council was one of the few councils who took advantago of the 3j per cent. Government loans which are not now available, so that tho council was getting money at a lower rate than any other local body in the Australian colonies.
